IV Therapy Basic Course

The Basic Intravenous Therapy Course for LPNs establishes standards approved by the Wyoming State Board of Nursing. The student learns to delineate the beginning skills and knowledge needed to administer and manage IV Therapy. 32 CEUs available. Call CCHEC at 307-328-9274 to learn more.

IV Therapy Advanced Course

This Advanced Intravenous Therapy Course for LPNs is directed toward establishing standards to assist the LPN in IV medication administration and central line management. 35 CEUs available. Call CCHEC at 307-328-9274 to learn more.

Admission Requirements

Participants must have successfully passed the basic intravenous therapy course for LPNs within the past two years, or have documented competency in clinical (IV) practice.

Course Outline

Unit I      Define the State Board Advisory Opinion and the legal implications for LPNs in this advanced role

Unit II    Review of Anatomy and Physiology of the Adult Circulatory System

IV Therapy Refresher Course

The IV Therapy Refresher Course is intended for LPNs who wish to renew certification in the state of Wyoming.

Admission Requirements

Participants must have successfully passed a Basic or

Advanced IV Therapy Course for practical nurses and

possess a current license to practice practical nursing in the State of Wyoming. LPNs who are currently certified in Basic or Advanced IV Therapy should take this refresher course, unless the student completed the initial IV Therapy Basic or Advanced Course within the last two years.

General Course Objectives

1. Policies, procedures, rules and regulations that govern the LPN when administering and managing IV therapy;

2. Legal implications when administering and managing IV therapy;

3. Anatomy and physiology of adult circulatory system;

4. Fluid and electrolytes in maintenance of homeostasis;

5. Principles of pharmacology as they relate to IV therapy;

6. Drugs and solutions commonly used in IV therapy and discuss their action, correct dosage, and adverse effects;

7. Safe use of selected IV equipment;

8. Calculate flow rate and regulate selected infusions;

9. Safely perform venipunctures with selected equipment;

10. Demonstrate safe, effective care of patients receiving IV therapy and discuss the signs and symptoms;

11. List the complications that may occur from IV therapy and discuss the signs and symptoms; and

12. Nursing action to be taken if complications occur.

BIO

Barbara Jean James is a graduate of Rawlins High School and holds a Masters Degree in Nursing from the

University of Wyoming. She has experience in Emergency Room, Acute Hospital, Home Health and Long Term Care.

Ms. James has been employed at Memorial Hospital Carbon County for 15 years at every clinical and supervisory level, and currently as a Diabetic Educator. She is also employed at Premium Health at Home, University of Wyoming as a clinical Instructor, and Kaplan University. She has been teaching classes at CCHEC since 2004 in IV Therapy, CNA II, Med-Aide, It Takes Two, New Daddy and Mommy classes and Wyoming Children’s Action Alliance STARS program, and as an instructor with Western Wyoming Community College from 2004-2010.
